Most people's experience of a gym is a busy, noisy, slightly overwhelming environment where you queue for equipment, train alongside people who are clearly more experienced than you, and spend as much energy managing the social anxiety of being a beginner in a public space as you do actually training.

That experience puts a lot of people off. Not because they do not want to train but because the environment makes it harder rather than easier to show up consistently and actually learn something.

Private boxing coaching at Belhus Boxing Club in South Ockendon is built around a completely different experience. When you come in for a 1-to-1 session the gym is yours. Quiet, focused, no audience, no waiting, no comparison to anyone else. Just you, your coach, and one hour of structured coaching built entirely around your specific level, your goals, and where you want to get to.

8am slots are now available for people who want to train before their working day starts and be back at their desk by 9am.

What Makes a Private Session Different

The difference between a private coaching session and a group class or a gym session is not just about having someone watch you. It is about the quality of attention and the specificity of instruction that is only possible when the coaching is focused on one person.

In a group environment, the coach is managing ten to fifteen people simultaneously. Corrections are general, demonstrations are for the group, and the individual gets a fraction of the attention that their development actually requires. Most people in group boxing classes plateau quickly because they receive general instruction that does not address their specific technical gaps, movement habits, or the particular things that are limiting their progress.

In a private session, every correction is yours. Every demonstration is built around what you specifically need to see. Every round is designed around your current level and your next development point. The progress that takes months in a group environment happens in weeks in a private one because the coaching is precise rather than general.

I have been coaching boxers at every level for years and the pattern is consistent. People who come to private sessions after time in group classes are almost always surprised by how much faster they develop. Not because the group was bad but because private instruction is a fundamentally different and more efficient learning environment.

Belhus Boxing Club — A Proper Gym Without the Intimidation

Belhus Boxing Club in South Ockendon is a proper boxing gym. Heavy bags, speed bags, a ring, good equipment, everything you need for a serious boxing session. But when you come in for a private 1-to-1 during an 8am or daytime slot, it is quiet and focused in a way that a busy commercial gym never is.

There are no crowds. There is no queue for the bags. There is no one doing a circuit class in the corner or watching you while you learn. It is a working gym environment that feels serious and purposeful without feeling intimidating.

That environment matters specifically for beginners and for people who have not trained before. The self-consciousness of learning something new in front of other people is a real barrier for a lot of adults. Removing that barrier by training privately means the energy that would go into managing that self-consciousness goes entirely into learning instead. People relax. People focus. People progress faster.

What to Expect From Your First Session

Your first session starts with a conversation. I want to know where you are starting from, what your goals are, whether you have any injuries or physical limitations I need to know about, and what you are hoping to get from the training. That conversation takes five minutes and it shapes everything that follows.

We warm up properly. A structured warm-up that begins to introduce the movement patterns of boxing specifically. Skipping if you can skip, footwork patterns, light shadowboxing. By the end of the warm-up your body is ready to work and you have already begun to feel the rhythm of boxing training.

The main session covers the technical foundations. Stance, guard, footwork, and the basic combinations. Every element is explained clearly, demonstrated, and then coached as you execute it. When something needs adjusting I will tell you what specifically needs to change and why. When something is good I will tell you that too.

We finish with conditioning work. Boxing-specific circuits that build fitness through the same movements boxing requires. By the end you will have worked genuinely hard and you will know it. Most people message me before the week is out to book the next one.

Who This Is For

Complete beginners who have never trained before and want to learn properly from day one.

People who work from home and want a focused activity that gets them out of their workspace before the working day begins. The 8am slot means you train first and work second. That order changes everything.

Adults who tried a gym or a group class, found it did not click, and want something actually designed around them.

People returning to fitness after time off, injury, or a period of low activity who need coaching that adapts to where they are.

Anyone who has been thinking about trying boxing and wants to start in an environment with no judgment, no comparison, and no expectation beyond showing up and doing the work.
