Why You Keep Getting Hit in Sparring (Even When You’re Trying)

Most boxers don’t have a discipline problem. They have a feedback problem.

My name is Aarron Morgan. I am a former national amateur champion, former Team GB trialist, former professional boxer, and a licensed BBBofC professional trainer. I have trained at an elite level, and I now coach beginners who believe they are terrible at boxing, when the real issue is a lack of structure and correction.

Most people are not bad. They are guessing.

If you keep getting hit in sparring and you do not understand why, this is exactly the type of problem that gets missed without proper feedback. If you want your boxing looked at properly, you can send me your footage, and I will break it down clearly for you.

You Feel Like You’re Getting Hit Too Easily

You go into sparring trying to focus.

You are thinking about your defence. You are trying to stay switched on.

But you still get caught.

Shots come back at you quickly. You feel like you cannot keep up. It starts to feel like no matter what you do, you are always on the receiving end.

That knocks your confidence.

What You Think The Problem Is

Most beginners assume it is reactions.

They think they are too slow or that the other person is just better than them.

That can be part of it, but it is not usually the main issue.

What Is Actually Happening

You are punching and then staying there.

You throw your shot, but your feet stop moving.

That leaves you in range with no defensive reset.

So your opponent has a clear opportunity to hit you back.

Over and over again.

This is one of the most common patterns I see when reviewing sparring footage.

Why It Feels So Fast

Because you are reacting late.

When you stay in range after punching, everything coming back at you feels rushed.

You do not have time to think or adjust.

That is why it feels like you are getting overwhelmed.

It is not always speed. It is positioning and timing.

The Simple Correction

Punch, bring it straight back to guard, and move your feet.

Do not admire your work.

Do not stay planted after you throw.

You either need to be out of range or set defensively straight away.

When you start doing that consistently, everything slows down.

Why This Changes Everything

Once you stop giving people free opportunities to hit you back, sparring becomes more controlled.

You start to feel like you are part of the exchange, not just reacting to it.

That is where confidence starts to build.

The Fastest Way To Fix It

This is very difficult to spot on your own.

You might feel like you are moving properly, but small delays in your feet or hands are enough to create openings.

If you want this corrected properly, send your footage, and I will show you exactly where you are getting caught and why.

Final Word

You are not getting hit because you are not good enough.

You are getting hit because you are staying in range at the wrong time,s and that has not been corrected yet.

Fix that, and sparring starts to feel completely different.
