Why Your Jab Keeps Falling Short (And How To Fix It)

Most boxers don’t have a discipline problem. They have a feedback problem.
My name is Aarron Morgan. I am a former national amateur champion, former Team GB trialist, former professional boxer, and a licensed BBBofC professional trainer. I have trained at an elite level, and I now work with beginners who believe they are terrible at boxing, when the real issue is a lack of structure and correction.
Most people are not bad. They are guessing.
If your jab keeps falling short, this is exactly the type of thing that gets missed when you are training on your own. If you want proper feedback on your technique, you can send me your footage, and I will break it down clearly for you.

Your Jab Feels Like It Never Lands
You are throwing it again and again, but it does not land cleanly.
It falls short. It gets parried. It feels weak. It feels like you are always just out of range.
That is frustrating, especially when you know the jab is supposed to be your most important punch.
Over time, it starts to feel like something is wrong with you, when in reality, it is usually something very small that has not been corrected.
What You Think The Problem Is
Most beginners assume it is a strength issue.
They think they need faster hands or more power.
That is rarely the case.
A jab that does not land is almost always a positioning problem.
What Is Actually Happening
You are too far away.
So instead of moving your feet into range, you reach with your hands.
That causes you to lean over your front foot just to try and land the shot.
Once that happens, you lose your base.
Your jab has no snap, no structure behind it, and it becomes easy to read and easy to deal with.
This is one of the most common issues I see when I review footage from beginners.
Why It Feels Fine When You Throw It
When you throw your jab, it feels like you are extending your arm properly.
It feels like you are doing the right thing.
But what you feel and what is actually happening are not the same.
Small errors in distance and balance completely change how effective your jab is.
That is why this problem can go on for weeks or months without being fixed.
The Simple Correction
Your feet get you into range. Then you punch.
Not the other way round.
Instead of reaching, focus on stepping into range first.
Stay slightly more balanced over your stance, rather than letting your weight fall over your front foot.
When your base is stable, your jab will naturally become sharper, quicker, and more effective.
You do not need ten different changes. You need the right correction applied consistently.
The Fastest Way To Fix It
If you are training on your own, this is very hard to spot.
You cannot see when you are overreaching or when your balance is off.
That is where proper feedback makes the difference.
If you want to fix your jab properly, send your footage, and I will show you exactly what is happening and what to change.

Final Word
Your jab is not falling short because you lack ability.
It is falling short because your distance and positioning are slightly off, and that has not been corrected yet.
Fix that, and everything starts to change.
